With an impressive performance heritage of over 100 years between them, the current BABS Gold medal quartetPortobello Road could, justifiably, describe themselves as experienced.  Winning in 2017 was the crowning glory for this group who have, between them, amassed 13 Gold medals along with numerous other colours.

Brian Schofield started singing Barbershop in 1982.  His quartet involvement and 6 Gold medal tally as a ‘lead’ (melody) singer forms a large part of British barbershop history over the past 35 years.  His beautiful wife Gaynor directs ‘Viva Acapella’, one of the UKs leading ladies choruses.

Stuart Owen has been singing Barbershop since 1991, he is married to the very lovely Helen who is also a quartet singer of some note.  With three Gold medals, Stuart is the greatest of bass singers (well… the best in the quartet anyway).

Like Brian, Ian James started singing way back in 1982 and has sung tenor in five medal winning quartets – three of which won Gold.  Ian co-directs the Colchester ladies choir‘Chorus Iceni’ along with his wonderful wife Nickie.

Steve Emery is the ‘newbie’ as he only started singing Barbershop in 2003 and migrated to baritone just 4 years ago.  Portobello Road are delighted that, in 2017, we have finally given Steve his much deserved first quartet Gold medal.  Steve’s wife, Paulette, very sensibly stays clear of barbershop and therefore enjoys a relatively normal life.
